OpenAI Adds Epic EHRs and Public Data to ChatGPT for Healthcare
The new Epic integration and Healthcare Public Data plugin connect governed clinical and public health sources to ChatGPT for Healthcare.
OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT for Healthcare with a new Epic electronic health record integration and a Healthcare Public Data plugin. The update lets eligible healthcare organizations bring authorized patient context and structured information from official public sources into ChatGPT.
The Epic integration can help clinicians review appointment notes, lab results, medications, specialist documentation, and other authorized chart information in one conversation. OpenAI says users can ask what changed since a patient's last visit, which recent results need attention, or what follow-ups and medication changes should be reviewed.
ChatGPT for Healthcare adds two connected data workflows
The Epic integration supports two workflows: bringing authorized EHR context into ChatGPT for review, and, in supported deployments, placing ChatGPT directly inside an EHR workflow so clinicians can work without leaving the patient chart.
The new Healthcare Public Data plugin connects ChatGPT to nine official healthcare sources, including PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, DailyMed, CMS Coverage, and RxNorm. Teams can work with specific records, identifiers, fields, and versions instead of manually searching each source.
OpenAI says this can support tasks such as comparing clinical-trial eligibility criteria, checking medication labels and warnings, reviewing Medicare coverage information, and researching provider records. The public-data apps are read-only and do not access patient charts.
The update builds on OpenAI's earlier ChatGPT Health launch, which focused on helping individual users connect personal health information to ChatGPT. The new announcement is aimed at healthcare organizations using governed, enterprise-oriented workflows.
Availability
OpenAI says eligible ChatGPT for Healthcare customers can ask their workspace administrator to enable the Epic integration and Healthcare Public Data plugin. Eligible ChatGPT Enterprise customers can contact their OpenAI account team about Regulated Workspace configurations, while eligible U.S. ChatGPT for Clinicians users can install Healthcare Public Data.
The company also says ChatGPT for Healthcare includes controls such as role-based access, single sign-on, audit logs, and HIPAA-compliant workflows when an applicable Business Associate Agreement is in place. OpenAI's announcement is available here.
