Claude Is Now Generally Available in Microsoft Foundry on Azure

Claude Microsoft Foundry is now generally available as of June 29. Claude Opus 4.8 and Claude Haiku 4.5 are live in the Messages API on Azure, with prompt caching and extended thinking supported from launch. Teams can route inference through a US data zone for data residency compliance, and Anthropic serves as the data processor. Azure authentication, networking, billing, and governance controls apply - no separate Anthropic account setup required.

Enterprise Agreement Customers Can Bill Claude Against Existing Azure Commitments

For enterprise teams, the billing detail is the most practical unlock. Eligible customers with a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement don't need a new procurement line or a separate Anthropic subscription - Claude usage draws against their existing Azure commitment. Engineering teams that have been stuck waiting on legal or procurement review can now route the conversation through their Azure account owner instead. That's a different approval path than opening a new SaaS relationship.

Claude in Microsoft Foundry also produces a single consolidated invoice alongside other Azure services. For finance and procurement teams managing dozens of vendor relationships, that consolidation carries real weight - even before the 50% discount California state agencies just negotiated separately for their own Claude deployment.

Two Hosting Paths - Azure Governance Now, Full Feature Parity Later

Anthropic offers two configurations in Foundry. "Hosted on Azure" runs inference inside your Azure environment with Azure identity, billing, governance, and a US data zone for data residency requirements. "Hosted on Anthropic" - previously the Foundry Preview - gives access to the full API feature set and any models not yet available on the Azure path. Anthropic says the two paths will converge on feature and model parity over time, but today teams must choose: compliance depth now, or full capability breadth.

For most enterprise teams, the compliance-first path makes sense. Regulated industries - financial services, healthcare, government - typically cannot deploy AI tools that route data through an external provider without specific contractual controls. Azure hosting gives those teams a path to production without a custom data processing agreement.

Four early customers confirmed production use on Foundry. Momentic, which runs AI-powered software testing, reports serving millions of tokens per minute on Azure. NVIDIA's VP of Enterprise Computing Justin Boitano cited Claude's reasoning and coding on GB300 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs as well-suited for "complex technical work" in agentic pipelines. Bolt says the combination of model quality and Azure infrastructure makes it viable for Fortune 500 customers expecting sustained throughput. Claude Opus 4.8 handles the complexity-heavy workloads across all four deployments - Haiku 4.5 covers high-volume, latency-sensitive tasks.

Anthropic confirmed it will expand both model availability and features in Foundry over time. No timeline was given for when the Azure-hosted and Anthropic-hosted paths reach full parity.
