OpenAI Launches Admin Plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex

OpenAI has launched the Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex, giving workspace administrators a conversational way to inspect usage, change settings, and act on approved requests. Instead of moving between analytics, settings, and reports, admins can work through the process in one conversation.

The plugin is aimed at growing workspaces where routine administration can involve checking adoption, investigating access problems, handling onboarding changes, and reviewing spending requests. OpenAI says it works within existing roles and permissions rather than creating a new layer of access.

What the Admin Plugin Can Manage

The Admin plugin covers four broad areas: workspace adoption and credit usage, member and group management, access and permissions, and usage limits or spending requests. Admins can add or remove members, update groups, review effective permissions, control feature or model access, and approve or deny usage requests with context.

The plugin can also support recurring administrative workflows. OpenAI says pending usage requests can be routed to Slack or Microsoft Teams for authorized reviewers, while feature-access requests can be checked against predefined criteria and granted automatically when they qualify.

Existing Permissions Still Control the Actions

OpenAI says the Admin plugin does not grant broader permissions. Each request is mapped to a supported read or write action based on the administrator's existing role, while workspace policies and approval requirements continue to apply.

For broader changes, admins can review what they requested, whether the action completed, and what changed. The plugin is exposing existing administration capabilities through conversation rather than bypassing the controls behind them.

OpenAI Is Using the Same Approach Internally

OpenAI says its IT team uses ChatGPT Work and Codex to move from questions to operational actions. The company says an agent handling employee IT requests in Slack resolves about 45% of ticket volume, while support data is also used to create operational health dashboards.

OpenAI says those dashboards helped eliminate its support backlog and let the IT team plan around demand as support volume roughly doubled. The Admin plugin builds on that internal approach by putting workspace administration into the same conversational workflow.

How to Get the Admin Plugin

OpenAI says admins can enable the plugin in ChatGPT workspace settings and install it from the Plugins directory in ChatGPT Work on the web or desktop app. OpenAI's current Plugins in ChatGPT and Codex documentation says availability can depend on the workspace, role, plan, supported surface, and underlying app permissions.

The Admin plugin is now available from the Plugins directory in ChatGPT Work, according to OpenAI's announcement. Its broader significance is giving administrators a conversational front end for the controls they already have.
