OpenAI says it will wind down its contract providing models to Cursor on November 12, following SpaceX's acquisition of the developer tool. OpenAI says it gave the maximum contractual notice to keep its models available through Cursor for as long as possible.

OpenAI said the decision was driven by concerns that SpaceX may not use its technology within OpenAI's terms of service. The company pointed to what it described as previous contract violations involving Elon Musk's companies.

OpenAI Cursor contract will end in November

OpenAI said its custom agreement with Cursor includes a limited window to cancel after a change of control. The company said it is using that window to delay cancellation until November 12, while also declining to provide future models to Cursor.

The decision affects developers who use OpenAI models through Cursor, which OpenAI said it has worked with for nearly four years. OpenAI said it intends to provide additional support during the transition.

OpenAI's announcement does not say that Cursor itself will shut down. The change specifically concerns OpenAI's model contract, with the proposed November 12 shutoff date giving Cursor and its users time to adjust.

The practical impact will depend on how Cursor handles model availability after the contract ends. OpenAI's announcement does not specify what alternative models or arrangements Cursor will use after November 12. Developers using OpenAI models through Cursor will therefore have time to prepare, but the exact post-contract experience remains to be determined.

Saganote has previously covered Cursor, as well as OpenAI's GPT-5.6 launch. The decision adds a new complication for developers who use Cursor as a multi-model coding environment.
