Perplexity Hybrid Compute Brings Private AI Work to Mac

Perplexity Hybrid Compute is now available in the Perplexity Mac app, splitting AI work between cloud models and a local model on the Mac. The approach lets Perplexity Computer use cloud-based reasoning, web search, and planning while keeping sensitive files and on-device actions local when needed.

What Perplexity Hybrid Compute Changes

Perplexity says Hybrid Compute is designed for tasks where users need frontier AI capabilities but cannot send all of their data to the cloud. Computer can begin a task in the cloud, then move sensitive steps to a local model running on the Mac.

A privacy gate on the Mac controls what information can leave the device. Before protected information is sent to the cloud, the gate can mask sensitive details, keep the information local, refuse the action, or ask the user for consent.

Cloud Reasoning, Local Data

The split is designed to happen inside one Computer workflow rather than forcing users to manually separate their prompts and files.

• The local model processes private files, sensitive information, and on-device actions.
• An on-device Perplexity classifier looks for sensitive details such as names, addresses, account numbers, credentials, payment card numbers, and government IDs.

Perplexity gives several professional examples, including financial diligence that compares public market information with confidential deal documents, legal research involving privileged files, and advertising work that uses local creative assets alongside web research.

Mac Requirements and Availability

Hybrid Compute is available to Perplexity Pro, Max, and Enterprise subscribers. The launch includes three local models: Gemma 4 E4B, Qwen3.6 35B-A3B, and a Perplexity model.

It works on Apple silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later with at least 24GB of unified memory. Perplexity also says users can run Computer on a dedicated Mac mini and access it remotely from an iPhone.

For Enterprise customers, administrators can set organization-wide rules for information that must remain on the Mac, information that can be masked before cloud processing, and actions that require user approval. Admins can also audit when information leaves a device.

The company says users can get started by opening the latest Perplexity Mac app, downloading a local model, and selecting Hybrid in the model selector.
