Apple Plans 11 New Macs Through 2028 - OLED MacBook With Touchscreen Leads the Roadmap
New iMacs and an entry-level MacBook Pro arrive this fall. An all-new OLED MacBook with a touchscreen follows by early 2027. Mac mini and Mac Studio timing is still unclear.
Apple is planning to overhaul its entire Apple Mac lineup with 11 new models over the next two years, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Mac sales are on track to grow for a third consecutive year - fueled in part by demand from developers and AI researchers running agentic workloads on Mac mini and Mac Studio hardware. The refresh wave starts this fall with a new entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro and the first iMac update since 2024.

- 14-inch MacBook Pro - Fall 2026. Carries the new M6 chip. Codename J804. Development reportedly complete.
- iMac - Fall 2026. First update in two years. Two models in testing: codenames J833 and J834. Development reportedly complete.

The OLED MacBook Is a Real Departure
Apple has argued against touchscreens on Mac for over a decade - the standard line being that reaching up to touch a vertical display causes arm fatigue faster than a trackpad does. An OLED touchscreen MacBook changes that position. Gurman says the high-end 14-inch and 16-inch models (K114, K116) are currently in internal testing with macOS 27.1, which is scheduled for release at the end of October. That puts their launch window at late 2026 or early 2027.
No details about the hinge, keyboard deck, or how the touchscreen interacts with macOS have surfaced. Apple testing hardware internally with a specific OS build is a reliable signal that the design is locked - so the touchscreen isn't a concept, it's a product.
Mac mini and Mac Studio: Supply Crunch Blocks the Successor Timeline
Both machines are in testing, but neither has a ship date. Current Mac mini and Mac Studio demand has outrun supply to the point where new orders reportedly won't arrive for at least three months. Tim Cook said in April that it could take "several months" to reach equilibrium. Until supply catches up, Apple is unlikely to announce successors that would further delay orders on current hardware.
Apple cancelled the M6 Pro and M6 Max chips earlier this year to fast-track an AI-focused chip architecture, and the M7 is now Apple's 2027 target. Mac Studio successors running M5 Max and M5 Ultra put them on a chip generation behind that trajectory - suggesting Apple will refresh them on their own cycle rather than waiting for M7 silicon.
What Buyers Should Do Right Now
Eleven machines across two years creates a wide "wait or buy" problem. MacBook Pro and iMac buyers have a clear answer - fall 2026 is close. MacBook Air buyers can wait for the early 2027 refresh without a long delay. Mac mini and Mac Studio buyers have no clean answer: current machines are back-ordered for months, and successor dates don't exist yet. Apple has not commented on any part of this roadmap.
