Claude Cowork Adds Record a Skill - Point It at Your Workflow and Let It Take Over
Record your screen, narrate your steps out loud, and Claude builds a skill it can run on demand. Desktop-only for now, on Pro, Max, and Team plans.
Anthropic added Claude Record a Skill to Claude Cowork on Tuesday, letting Pro, Max, and Team plan subscribers teach Claude a repeatable task by recording a narrated screen walkthrough. Claude analyzes the recording - your steps, clicks, and voiceover - and generates a skill it can run again on demand. Record a Skill lives under the "+" button in the Cowork chat input on the Claude desktop app. Browser access is not supported.
How to Record a Skill in Claude Cowork
- Open the Claude desktop app. Record a Skill does not work in the browser version of Claude - desktop only.
- Switch to Cowork mode. Toggle your chat window to Cowork. Pro, Max, and Team plans only.
- Click "+" in the chat box and select "Record a skill." Choose your microphone when prompted.
- Do the task while narrating out loud. Hit Start Recording, then walk through your workflow on screen, talking through each action as you go.
- Click Done. Claude processes your steps, clicks, and voiceover and outputs a repeatable skill you can trigger anytime.
OpenAI's Codex Added the Same Feature Five Weeks Ago
OpenAI's Codex desktop app shipped a functionally similar feature on June 18 called Record and Replay. Codex's version runs on Mac only and excludes users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom - no timeline for Windows or those regions. Anthropic's announcement lists no regional restrictions for Record a Skill.
Job Displacement Was the First Reaction on X
Reaction split quickly between people who saw a useful workflow tool and people who read it as a threat. One user on X summed up the latter view: "This has to be the easiest way to be replaced and lose your job man." AI accounted for 31% of all job cuts in June 2026 - a figure that covers a wide range of roles - which is why a feature that explicitly captures someone's on-screen work process lands differently than generic AI productivity claims.
Whether a recorded skill actually replaces a worker depends on how much judgment a job requires beyond its visible steps. Claude Record a Skill captures what someone does on screen; capturing why they make each decision is a different problem entirely. Claude Cowork launched on web and mobile earlier this year with the stated goal of handling business operations tasks - and skill recording is the most direct implementation of that goal yet. Anthropic has not said how many skill types the feature currently supports or when it will be available outside the desktop app.
