Instagram Limits Reach of Undisclosed AI Profiles
The platform is replacing its “AI creator” label and restricting recommendations for unlabeled synthetic personas.
Instagram AI-Generated Profile Rules Tighten
Instagram is tightening its disclosure rules for AI-generated profile accounts. The platform is replacing its “AI creator” label with “AI-generated profile” and says profiles featuring AI-generated people that do not use the label may have their reach limited.
Instagram says the change responds to users who can mistake a synthetic persona for a real person. The new wording is intended to make it clearer when the person featured on a profile was generated or substantially created with AI.
What Changes for AI Profiles
Profiles that feature an AI-generated person are expected to use the new AI-generated profile label. Instagram says creators who proactively add the label will not be penalized simply because the person featured on the profile is AI-generated.
For profiles that do not disclose an AI-generated person, Instagram can limit distribution through recommendations. The company says creators can review their status and appeal if they believe a label or restriction was applied incorrectly.
The policy does not apply to ordinary AI-assisted creation. Creators who use AI to edit photos, polish captions, create graphics, or make other creative changes do not need to use the AI-generated profile label.
Existing AI Creator Labels Are Changing
Creators who previously added Instagram’s “AI creator” label will see the new name and can review whether the AI-generated profile label still applies. They can remove it if their profile no longer fits the criteria.
The update was announced by Instagram on August 31, 2026, through its Creators blog. The company did not describe the change as a ban on AI-generated content. Instead, the new rule focuses on disclosure for profiles built around synthetic people.
