Mistral Raises €3B to Push Sovereign Open-Weight AI Forward
Samsung leads the funding round, valuing the French AI company at more than €21 billion.
Mistral €3B Series D funding gives the French AI company fresh capital to expand its frontier research, computing capacity, infrastructure, and commercial operations.
Samsung Electronics led the round, joined by Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity. BlackRock-managed funds, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and other existing investors also participated.
Mistral says the funding will support its strategy around sovereign AI, which focuses on giving organizations more control over their data, models, compute infrastructure, and deployed systems. The company says it now operates across 20 countries and supports more than 125 global enterprises.
The round also strengthens Mistral's position in the growing open-weight AI market. Its approach is built around models that organizations can customize and deploy under their own infrastructure and control requirements. That direction is increasingly relevant as companies and governments look for alternatives to relying entirely on closed AI systems.
The funding comes as other AI companies continue to expand their models and compute infrastructure. Reflection AI's $6 billion SpaceX Colossus compute deal is one example of the infrastructure investment surrounding frontier AI. Meanwhile, DeepSeek's $7.1 billion funding round shows the scale of capital now moving into AI companies.
Mistral said the new capital will also help accelerate its international expansion and commercial growth. The company did not announce a new model as part of the funding round, instead positioning the investment as support for its broader AI research, infrastructure, and product roadmap.
