Uber Layoffs Cut 3,300 Jobs as Company Restructures
Uber is cutting about 10% of its team as it removes management layers and simplifies how its business is organized.
Uber layoffs will affect about 10% of the company's workforce as Uber restructures its organization to remove management layers, simplify teams, and redirect resources toward future growth. TechCrunch reports that the cuts amount to roughly 3,300 jobs, while Uber's own announcement confirms the 10% workforce reduction.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the changes are intended to make Uber "simpler and faster" after years of growth added more layers, coordination, and fragmented ownership. Employees whose roles are affected have been notified, except where local employment rules require a different process.
Uber layoffs target layers and small teams
The restructuring is focused heavily on organizational complexity. Uber says it is removing layers of management and changing team structures, while TechCrunch reports that the company plans to reduce its management ranks by about 20%.
Uber is also cutting the number of teams with only one or two members by about 50%. Its engineering, science, and delivery organizations are being combined, while restaurant, retail, and direct delivery operations are being brought together under a simpler structure.
The company is also sharply reducing remote work. Uber says only about 1% of employees will be able to work remotely going forward, with teams increasingly concentrated in its major hubs.
Uber plans to reinvest the savings
Khosrowshahi said the restructuring is designed to create more capacity for investment rather than simply reduce costs. Uber plans to direct savings toward growth, innovation, drivers, couriers, merchants, its core business, and its longer-term autonomous vehicle strategy.
The changes come as Uber continues expanding beyond traditional ridesharing into delivery and autonomous transportation. The company has also been adding new safety features for younger riders, including live video for teen rides.
Uber says the goal is a leaner organization with clearer ownership and faster decisions. The workforce reduction is part of that broader restructuring, rather than an announcement of a slowdown in the company's overall business.
