ChatGPT for Word Is Now Available to Free Users, Too
OpenAI has brought ChatGPT directly into Microsoft Word, with drafting, summarizing, rewriting, and formatting tools available across all ChatGPT plans.
ChatGPT for Word is now available to everyone, including Free users, putting OpenAI's AI assistant directly inside Microsoft Word. The add-in opens ChatGPT in a sidebar where it can use the open document as context for drafting, summarizing, rewriting, and formatting. OpenAI announced the rollout on September 17. ChatGPT for Word follows the same broader push toward letting ChatGPT work directly with the files and tools people already use.
What ChatGPT for Word Can Do
ChatGPT for Word works from inside the document rather than requiring users to copy everything into a separate ChatGPT window. OpenAI says users can ask questions about the open document, select text for a specific revision, or turn notes and source material into a first draft.
- Draft a memo, proposal, or report from notes and source text.
- Summarize a document or create an executive summary.
- Rewrite a section for a different audience.
- Reorganize content and adjust headings, numbering, and formatting.
- Check a draft for unclear language or inconsistent terminology.
That makes the Word integration different from simply opening ChatGPT in another browser tab. The document is already available as the working context, so an edit request can start with the text selected in Word.
ChatGPT for Word Is Available on Free
OpenAI says ChatGPT for Word is available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free. Word uses token-based pricing at the API rates for the model being used, and the user's plan limits still apply. Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces also have administrative controls. Workspace admins can turn ChatGPT for Word on or off in the ChatGPT admin console, while Microsoft 365 administrators must allow the ChatGPT add-in for it to appear in Word. OpenAI says Word access will be enabled by default starting October 1, 2026.
How to Get ChatGPT Into Microsoft Word
- Install the ChatGPT add-in from Microsoft Marketplace.
- Open Microsoft Word and launch ChatGPT from the ribbon.
- Sign in with your ChatGPT account.
- If you use an organization workspace, select the appropriate workspace.
- Open a document and enter your request in the ChatGPT sidebar.

What It Means for Existing ChatGPT Workflows
The Word integration extends a pattern that is already appearing across ChatGPT. Instead of treating documents as attachments that must be moved into a chat, ChatGPT can increasingly work where the content already lives. OpenAI Also Adds Chrome Extensions and Windows Appshots
The Word release was part of a larger set of ChatGPT desktop updates. OpenAI also added support for Chrome extensions inside the built-in browser in the ChatGPT desktop app. Users can install and pin supported extensions such as 1Password, while enterprise administrators can centrally deploy supported extensions.
The built-in browser keeps its own browser state rather than automatically using the user's existing Chrome profile, cookies, sessions, or extensions. That means installing an extension inside ChatGPT does not simply import the extension setup from Chrome.
OpenAI also expanded multi-account support for most plugins, allowing users to connect personal and work accounts for supported services in the same conversation. On Windows, Appshots are now available as well. Pressing both Alt keys captures the frontmost application window together with text made available by the app, then attaches that context to a new ChatGPT prompt.
What to Check Before Using It
ChatGPT for Word can change document content and formatting, so OpenAI recommends checking important facts, figures, citations, and edits before sharing a document. Complex formatting, tables, and charts may still require manual adjustments. It also cannot automatically reference other local files on your computer, so relevant material from another file needs to be pasted into the prompt.
For workspaces, availability can also depend on administrator settings. If ChatGPT does not appear in Word, the organization's ChatGPT and Microsoft 365 administrators may need to allow the add-in.
