Google Adds More Personalization to Search, Discover, and News
New controls let users choose preferred sources, tune Discover with natural-language requests, and personalize Google News audio briefings.
Google personalization is expanding across Search, Discover, and Google News, giving users more direct control over the sources and topics they see. The changes include a new Preferred Sources button for publisher websites, natural-language controls for Discover, and customizable audio briefings in Google News on Android. Google's announcement
The updates build on Google's existing personalization tools but move more of that control into the products themselves. Google says users can now signal which sources they prefer, tell Discover what they want to see using conversational requests, and select topics for personalized audio news briefings.
Preferred Sources Gets a New Button
Google is expanding Preferred Sources with a button that publishers can place on their own websites. A reader can use the button to add that site to their preferred sources in Google Search without leaving the page.
Preferred Sources can also surface selected publishers more prominently in relevant Search experiences. Google says more than 600,000 sites have now been selected by users, up from 345,000 in May.
The change connects with Google's broader push to give publishers and creators more visibility in Search. Saganote recently covered Google Search Console platform properties rolling out globally, which gives eligible sites new ways to measure how social and video content appears across Google Search and Discover.
Discover Can Be Tuned With Natural-Language Requests
Google is also adding a conversational control to Discover. From the menu beside a story, users can describe what they want to see more or less of, and Google says Discover can adjust the feed based on that request.
This gives Discover a more direct personalization mechanism than simply tapping individual feedback controls. Google says the requests can be made in natural language, making the feed easier to tune around changing interests.
Google News Adds Personalized Audio Briefings
Google News on Android is getting another personalization option for its AI-powered audio briefings. Users can select the topics they want included, while the generated briefing identifies its news sources and links back to the full stories.
Google has not specified in the announcement exactly which countries or languages will receive every part of the update, so the rollout should not be treated as universal. The company is presenting the three changes as part of a broader effort to give people more control over how information is delivered.
More Control Over Google's Information Feeds
The changes bring Search, Discover, and News closer together around the same idea: users can increasingly shape what Google's systems prioritize for them. That direction also fits Google's recent expansion of AI features inside Search, including new connected apps and AI Mode capabilities.
For now, the most concrete changes are the Preferred Sources button, conversational Discover controls, and topic selection for Google News audio briefings. Availability varies by feature, platform, language, and market, and Google has not provided a single global rollout date for all three.
