Walmart Apple Pay support is finally coming to US stores. Walmart announced that tap-to-pay is coming to Walmart and Sam's Club locations, adding Apple Pay and Google Pay alongside the retailer's existing payment options.

The move marks a notable change for Walmart, which has historically promoted its own Walmart Pay system instead of accepting Apple Pay or Google Pay at its US checkout terminals. Walmart says the new tap-to-pay option will give customers more ways to pay in stores.

Apple Pay and Google Pay Are Coming to Walmart

Customers will be able to use compatible phones and other supported devices to tap and pay at Walmart and Sam's Club checkout terminals. The company says the rollout will begin in the US, although the announcement does not give a single date for every store.

The addition means shoppers who already keep cards in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet will have another way to pay without switching to Walmart Pay for the transaction.

Walmart Is Expanding Its Tap-to-Pay Options

Walmart's payment strategy has historically centered on its own Walmart Pay experience, which is integrated into the Walmart app. Adding Apple Pay and Google Pay removes a major limitation for shoppers who prefer the default mobile wallets on their phones.

The change also fits a wider shift toward mobile and digital payments. Saganote recently covered TikTok exploring money transfers through direct messages, showing how payment functionality is moving into more consumer apps and services.

What This Means for Walmart Shoppers

For customers, the practical change is simple: a compatible iPhone, Apple Watch, Android phone, or other supported device can be used for contactless payment where the new capability is available. Exact device and card requirements depend on the mobile wallet and participating card issuer.

Walmart Apple Pay support does not replace the retailer's existing payment methods. Walmart Pay and traditional card payments remain available, while Apple Pay and Google Pay add another route at checkout.

Why Walmart's Decision Matters

Walmart is one of the largest retailers in the US, so accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay expands contactless payment access across a huge physical retail footprint. It also brings Walmart closer to the payment experience customers already encounter at many other major retailers.

The move is less about introducing a new payment technology than removing a long-standing restriction. For shoppers who already use Apple Pay or Google Pay elsewhere, Walmart stores will no longer require a separate payment workflow once the rollout reaches their location.

Rollout Details

Walmart says tap-to-pay is coming to Walmart and Sam's Club stores in the US. The company has announced the expansion but has not provided a store-by-store schedule, so availability may vary during the rollout.

Customers can continue using Walmart's existing payment methods while Apple Pay and Google Pay support rolls out.
