TikTok Explores Money Transfers Through Direct Messages in the US App
Code found in TikTok's US iPhone app points to peer-to-peer payments, but the feature is not currently being tested.
TikTok money transfers could eventually happen inside the app's direct messages. Bloomberg reports that TikTok is exploring a feature that would let users send money to one another through DMs, based on code found in the current US iPhone app. TikTok told Bloomberg the feature is not currently being tested in any market.
The reported feature is still an idea under development, not a launch announcement. If TikTok releases it, the payment flow would reportedly use TikTok Pay, the company's existing payment infrastructure, rather than sending users to a separate service.
What the TikTok Money Transfers Feature Could Do
The code examined by Bloomberg points to a peer-to-peer payment flow built directly into conversations. A recipient could tap to accept an incoming payment before an expiration date, while the sender could receive updates about the transaction's status.
The payment could also carry a message. That would make the transaction part of the conversation instead of a separate payment screen, a model already familiar from dedicated peer-to-peer payment apps.
- Send money to another TikTok user through a direct message
- Let the recipient accept a payment before it expires
- Show the sender updates about the transaction
- Attach a message to the payment
TikTok Already Has In-App Payment Infrastructure
TikTok already supports in-app payments around TikTok Shop in several markets, giving the company experience with commerce and payment flows inside the app. Its official TikTok Shop documentation describes in-app shopping and payment support across markets including Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines. TikTok Shop remains focused on commerce today, while the reported DM feature would extend payments to person-to-person transfers.
The distinction matters because TikTok has not announced a general-purpose wallet or US peer-to-peer payment service. The Bloomberg report describes code pointing to a possible feature, while TikTok says it is not currently being tested.
TikTok Would Join a Wider Social Payments Push
Social platforms are increasingly putting financial tools next to messaging and content. X Money launched in the US with peer-to-peer transfers, a Visa debit card, and other financial features, showing how a social platform can move beyond content into payments.
Messaging platforms are also adding more controls around conversations. Saganote recently covered WhatsApp's new parental controls on iPhone, while RCS on iPhone shows how messaging features continue to expand across platforms. TikTok's reported payment work would add a financial layer to that same messaging surface.
The Feature Is Not Ready for Users
There is no confirmed launch date, market rollout, or user-testing program for TikTok's reported money transfers. The feature could change substantially or never ship. For now, the strongest evidence is the code found in the US iPhone app and Bloomberg's reporting, with TikTok saying the feature is not currently being tested.
If TikTok does move ahead, the next meaningful signal would be a formal announcement, a visible payment interface, or evidence of testing in a specific market. Until then, TikTok money transfers remain a development project rather than an available feature.
