Airbnb AI Search Adds Social Trip Discovery and Smarter Planning
Airbnb is combining natural-language search with recommendations from friends and previous travel companions.
Airbnb is adding a broader set of AI and social features to its travel app, with Airbnb AI search now letting travelers describe what they want in their own words or by voice. The September 30 update also adds new ways to discover trips through friends, family, and people they have traveled with before. Airbnb says the new features are rolling out in stages, with AI trip-planning features starting in the US. Airbnb's official fall 2026 update provides the full rollout details.
Airbnb AI Search Moves Beyond Traditional Filters
The new Airbnb AI search uses a search bar where users can search across homes, experiences, and services using natural language or voice. Airbnb is also adding AI filters that interpret keywords inside the filter system. For example, searching for "baby" can surface filters related to cribs, playgrounds, and children's books or toys.
Airbnb is also using AI after search results appear. Listing results can include AI-generated descriptions that highlight important home features, while a new comparison view lets users place wishlist homes side by side with AI summaries of their key attributes.
The approach follows a wider shift toward AI-assisted travel discovery. Google AI Mode's travel features, for example, also bring trip research and hotel booking into a more conversational search experience.
Social Features Turn Past Trips Into Recommendations
Airbnb is also making travel discovery more social. Starting September 30, users can connect with family, friends, and people they have traveled with on Airbnb. A new Travel Map can show where connections have stayed or are planning to go, along with booked experiences and services where available.
Users can explore recommendations, reviews, and saved favorites from their connections, and Airbnb says people can control which trips appear on their travel map. Connections can also be removed or blocked.
That puts personal recommendations directly inside the same app where users search and book. It also builds on Airbnb's earlier work around smarter maps and travel discovery. Google Maps Ask Maps shows a similar direction in which AI connects travel questions with actions such as finding restaurants and booking hotels.
Airbnb Is Expanding Services Around the Stay
The fall update also expands Airbnb's services beyond the booking itself. Depending on location, guests can access meal delivery, grocery delivery, laundry pickup and delivery, baby gear rentals, and local equipment rentals.
Availability varies by market. Airbnb says meal delivery is available in select European cities, laundry is launching in select US cities, and baby gear rentals are scheduled to start in November in more than 60 US cities. Other services, including ski and snowboard gear in the French Alps and boats in South Florida, are tied to specific local markets.
What Happens Next
The most immediate change is the combination of AI-assisted search and personal travel discovery. Airbnb is moving more of the trip-planning process into its own app, from describing a trip and comparing homes to finding services and getting recommendations from people a traveler already knows.
Rollout remains location-dependent, so the full set of AI, social, and service features will not appear for every Airbnb user at the same time. Airbnb says its AI trip-planning features are starting in the US, while individual services and neighborhood features have their own market restrictions.
