Google has released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7 for supported Pixel devices, addressing two practical bugs: excess battery drain while a phone is idle and HTTPS downloads that fail immediately when started through Android’s system DownloadManager. The update arrived on October 9, even as Google’s next QPR3 beta cycle is already underway.
What Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7 fixes
- Idle battery drain: A bug could prevent a phone from entering deep sleep when Flip to Shh was enabled, leading to excessive battery use while the device was idle.
- Failed HTTPS downloads: Downloads started through the system DownloadManager could fail immediately when using HTTPS.
These are targeted fixes rather than a feature-focused release. The battery fix matters most to people who use Flip to Shh, which silences a Pixel when it is placed face down. The download fix addresses a system-level problem that could affect apps relying on Android’s DownloadManager.
The release uses build CP41.260831.016. Google’s official Android 17 QPR2 release notes also list a known issue: Pixel 11 Pro Fold owners may need to enroll Face Unlock again for it to work properly.
Which Pixel devices can install it?
Google lists Beta 7 images for Pixel 6a and newer supported models, including the Pixel 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 families, along with Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold models. The Android Emulator is supported too. Availability can depend on the device and its current beta build.
Users enrolled in the Android Beta for Pixel program should receive the update over the air. Google also provides installation options through its Android 17 QPR2 setup guide. Beta software can contain unresolved bugs, so backing up important data before installing remains sensible.
QPR2 continues while QPR3 testing begins
Beta 7 is another maintenance step in the current QPR2 cycle, not a sign that Google has stopped working on the next release. For context, Saganote previously covered Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5’s eight Pixel bug fixes, Beta 4’s 16 fixes across the interface and other areas, and Beta 3’s new features and call-forwarding security changes.
The practical takeaway is straightforward: Beta 7 is worth noting for testers affected by either bug, especially the idle battery drain. It remains beta software, and the Face Unlock issue on Pixel 11 Pro Fold is still listed as unresolved.
