Android 17 Can Now Transfer Your eSIM and Passwords When You Switch From iPhone - No App Required
Google announced the upgraded migration tool at Galaxy Unpacked in London alongside Gemini Intelligence task automation across 40+ apps and Gemini Notebook on Samsung's new foldables.
Google used Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event in London on Wednesday to announce an upgraded switch from iPhone to Android experience built directly into Android 17. For the first time, the migration runs wirelessly and without downloading a separate app - and it now moves data types that previous Android migrations couldn't touch: Google Account credentials, saved passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and your eSIM. Photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendar events carry over too. Android 17 has been in QPR2 beta since earlier this month, and this migration upgrade starts rolling out to select Pixel devices now, alongside the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8 series.
eSIM Transfer Is the Part That Actually Changes the Process
Every previous iPhone-to-Android migration left eSIM as a manual step - you had to contact your carrier, wait for a new QR code or activation, and set it up separately. Android 17 handles eSIM transfer in the same wireless session as everything else. For most people switching carriers alongside their phone, that single change cuts out the most friction-heavy part of the entire move. Google points to android.com/switch for anyone working through the process now.
Gemini Intelligence Expands to 40+ Apps at Unpacked
The switch feature wasn't the only Google announcement at Unpacked. Gemini Intelligence - Google's label for agentic task automation on Android - now supports more than 40 apps, up from a limited beta set. Gemini can book restaurant reservations, order food delivery, buy event tickets, and handle travel bookings on your behalf. On the Galaxy Z Flip8, the feature is accessible from the Flex Window with a long press of the power button. Gemini can also parse images as prompts - show it a shopping list photo and it understands what you need without typing anything out.
Tasks run in the background while you use other apps or close the phone entirely. Gemini notifies you when something needs your sign-off before finalizing. Apple's decision to put Google Gemini inside Siri at WWDC 2026 reflects the same pattern: Gemini doing agentic work across apps is what Google is betting on as the next layer of mobile utility.
Gemini Notebook Ships Preinstalled on the Z Fold8
Gemini Notebook - rebranded from NotebookLM earlier this month - ships preinstalled on the Galaxy Z Fold8 series. On the Fold8's larger inner display, you can drag photos, documents, whiteboard shots, and voice recordings into a side-by-side workspace. Notebook turns those sources into slide decks, flash cards, quizzes, videos, or podcasts. Every Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, and Flip8 includes a six-month Google AI Pro trial that unlocks Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Slides, and more.
Galaxy Watch 9 and Smart Glasses Round Out the Announcement
On the Galaxy Watch 9, Gemini activates when you raise your wrist - no wake word required. Gemini-powered intelligent eyewear from Gentle Monster and Warby Parker (announced at Google I/O) gets two additional frame designs today, launching this fall with gesture controls via a paired Wear OS watch. Samsung switched Galaxy devices to Google Messages after dropping its own messaging app - a sign of how tightly the two companies have been aligning their software stacks well before this Unpacked event.
