Google is redesigning the icons for Google Messages, Phone by Google, and Google Contacts, giving the three communication apps a shared gradient look. The rollout began on November 2, 2026, and Google says the refreshed icons will reach home screens over the coming weeks. The apps' features and functionality are not changing.
The new designs use subtle gradients, sharper edges, and updated curvature and coloring. Google says the changes are intended to make the icons clearer on home screens and bring them closer to the visual style of its other apps and its four-color Google logo.
Three apps get the same visual refresh
The redesign covers the icons for texting, calling, and managing contacts. Their familiar shapes remain recognizable, but the colors and contours have been adjusted to create a more consistent appearance across Google's communication tools.
The Google Messages icon was already appearing in the latest beta before Google's wider announcement. 9to5Google reported that the refreshed icon was live in the beta on November 2. Google has now confirmed that Phone and Contacts are receiving updated icons as well.
The change is visual only. Google says users should not expect new messaging options, calling features, or contact-management tools as part of this rollout. The icons will appear gradually over the coming weeks rather than arriving for every user at once.
Part of Google's wider icon redesign
Google has been extending its gradient design across its products, including Workspace apps. The refreshed communication icons continue that visual direction, making Messages, Phone, and Contacts look more consistent with the wider Google app family.
Google Messages has received functional updates separately, including custom chat themes and backgrounds. Google has also adjusted the Phone app's navigation before, including the return of its Contacts tab. Those changes affect how people use the apps; this latest update changes only their icons.
Google has not provided a specific completion date for the rollout. Users may see the new designs at different times as the update reaches their devices and app surfaces.
