Google Wallet notifications are getting a dedicated home in the Android app, while passport-based ID pass options are beginning to appear for Ireland and Italy. The notifications feed adds a bell icon beside the profile switcher, and the passport options are showing up for some users in a gradual rollout. Google's public ID pass documentation has not yet added Ireland or Italy to its supported-region list.
The new feed was first reported by 9to5Google after the feature began appearing in Wallet. Google had already listed an “in-app message center in Google Wallet” in its official Google System Services release notes. The notes confirm the message center, although they do not describe every type of update that will appear in it.
Google Wallet Adds an In-App Notifications Feed
The bell icon appears in the top-right area of Google Wallet, beside the profile switcher. Tapping it opens a feed for updates about items stored in Wallet. The feature is being enabled through a server-side rollout, so users may see it at different times and may not need to install a separate app update.
The feed gives Wallet-related updates a place inside the app, rather than leaving users to find them among other phone notifications. Google has confirmed the addition of an in-app message center, but has not publicly detailed all the message types it will support. The exact contents of the feed may therefore vary as the rollout develops.
The change is part of a wider set of updates to digital wallets and stored passes. Saganote has covered new Chrome features involving Google Wallet and Google Pay's expansion to in-store payments at Walmart. Apple's Wallet is also adding new capabilities in iOS 27, including pass creation and order features, as covered in our iOS 27 Wallet overview.
Ireland and Italy Begin Appearing in Digital Passport Setup
Google Wallet is also beginning to show Ireland and Italy as options when users create a passport-based ID pass. The countries follow Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, which are listed in Google's current support documentation. The new options have not yet been added to that official list, so their appearance in the app points to an early or limited rollout rather than a fully documented launch.
Google calls the feature an “ID pass.” Eligible users can create one by scanning the passport's information page, reading its security chip with the phone's NFC connection, and completing a face-verification step. Google says users receive a notification after the verification process is complete.
Users can check for the option by opening Google Wallet on an eligible Android phone, selecting Add to Google Wallet, and looking under IDs and personal information for ID pass. The available passport regions depend on the rollout and eligibility. If Ireland or Italy does not appear, that does not necessarily indicate a problem with the phone or passport.
A Digital ID Pass Does Not Replace a Physical Passport
Google's ID pass help page says an ID pass is not an official form of identification in every situation and does not replace physical documentation. Acceptance varies by region and by the organization checking the ID. Google's documented US use case includes eligible passport-based ID passes at certain TSA checkpoints; this does not establish acceptance for international travel, border crossings, or every identity check in Ireland and Italy.
Users should keep their physical passport available and check requirements with the relevant airline, airport, government agency, or service before relying on a digital pass. The appearance of a country in Wallet's setup screen should not be treated as confirmation that the pass is accepted for every travel or identification purpose.
What the Rollout Means for Wallet Users
The notifications feed is a confirmed addition in Google's system update notes, while the Ireland and Italy passport options are currently supported by reporting about what has appeared in the app. Google's public documentation still lists five supported passport regions, so the new options should be described as limited until the company updates its guidance or confirms wider availability.
Together, the changes extend Google Wallet's role beyond payment cards to a more central place for stored passes and digital identity. The notifications feed is beginning to roll out on Android, while passport-based ID pass availability remains dependent on region and eligibility.
