OpenAI has launched the ChatGPT Linux app, giving Linux users a dedicated desktop version of ChatGPT instead of relying on the web app. The preview brings ChatGPT, Work, and Codex together in a native desktop experience.

OpenAI is releasing the ChatGPT Linux app as a preview worldwide. The app is supported on the following Linux distributions:

  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
  • Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
  • Debian 13
  • Fedora 43
  • Fedora 44

The Linux release includes the core ChatGPT experience available on OpenAI’s other desktop platforms, while Codex gives developers a dedicated environment for working with code. The launch comes as ChatGPT continues to expand its user base, recently reaching 1 billion monthly users.

OpenAI says the Linux app is available as a free download, with access depending on the user’s ChatGPT plan. The company is releasing the desktop app as a preview, allowing Linux users to try it while OpenAI continues refining the experience.

The addition of Codex is particularly relevant for developers who work on Linux as their primary development environment. Bringing OpenAI’s coding tool into the new desktop app gives them a more direct way to use Codex alongside ChatGPT without switching between a browser and separate tools.
