ChatGPT hit 1 billion monthly active users in May 2026, becoming the fastest app in history to reach the milestone, according to Sensor Tower data cited by Reuters on June 2. Three years from launch. TikTok needed seven. Instagram took about six. Google Maps and YouTube each cleared five. OpenAI built a product with more monthly users than the population of China, in roughly the same time frame it takes a startup to close a Series B round.

ChatGPT Reached 1 Billion Users Without a Single Pre-Installed Device Deal

Launched in November 2022, ChatGPT reached 1 billion users by May 2026 - tracking at 1.1 billion now - without the distribution advantages that Google or Apple used to scale their biggest products. No pre-installed app. No operating system deal. Just a chat interface that people kept choosing over alternatives, month after month.

By February 2026, OpenAI was already reporting 900 million weekly active users. Three months later, monthly actives crossed 1 billion. That jump - from weekly to monthly scale in a single quarter - points to habitual returning use, not one-time curiosity driving the numbers.

ChatGPT's Market Share Dropped to 46% the Same Month User Counts Hit a Record

Here is the number that matters more: ChatGPT's share of the global AI assistant market dropped from above 50% in January 2026 to 46.4% by May. Market share down. Users up. Google Gemini and Anthropic's Claude pulled users away even as OpenAI's raw totals kept climbing, because the whole category grew faster than any single platform could hold.

OpenAI's Revenue Hit $25 Billion but Operating Margins Stayed Deep in the Red

OpenAI's annual recurring revenue reached $25 billion by early 2026, up from $6 billion in 2024, as its valuation hit $852 billion after raising $122 billion across multiple rounds. Numbers that look strong on the surface. But operating margins ran at -122% in Q1 2026, meaning OpenAI spent far more serving those 1.1 billion users than it collected from them across the same period.

Hitting 1 billion users is a consumer benchmark. Sustaining 1.1 billion users at a profit is an infrastructure problem - and one that the milestone number alone does not solve. Competitors including Gemini and Claude are gaining enterprise share while OpenAI burns cash keeping the consumer product free or near-free for the majority of its user base.

OpenAI has not confirmed a public listing date. Goldman Sachs projects total 2026 IPO proceeds could reach $160 billion, with OpenAI among the companies expected to list before year end.
