Patreon Cuts 93 Jobs - 20% of Its Workforce - as CEO Jack Conte Cites AI's Effect on How Tech Companies Build

Patreon laid off 93 employees on Thursday - 20% of its total workforce - in what CEO Jack Conte called the most painful decision he has had to make. Conte posted the memo publicly on Patreon itself, saying the cuts were driven by the need to adjust the company's cost structure and reorganize around a smaller, faster team. Patreon layoffs of this size have not happened since the company cut 17% of staff in 2022.

"Our core business is strong," Conte wrote. "But we have to respond to market changes and adjust our cost structure to remain stable." He said AI has fundamentally changed how technology companies build products - allowing smaller teams to accomplish more - and that Patreon had to adapt its organizational structure accordingly. Patreon is also flattening its management layers and consolidating teams around its highest-priority work.

"Not Because AI Replaces Humans"

Conte drew a direct line between AI and the restructuring, then just as directly pushed back on the obvious interpretation. "To be clear about the impact of AI on today's decision: we are not making the above changes because we believe AI replaces humans," he wrote. "The more we have learned to use these new tools, the clearer it has become that they are not substitutes for the creativity, judgment, detail orientation, or craftsmanship that our teammates have in spades."

His argument was that AI changed how Patreon operates - how teams build, communicate, and prioritize - not that machines are doing the jobs that people used to do. That distinction matters for a platform whose entire value proposition is human creativity, and whose creators would take a dim view of the company automating its way through its own workforce while telling them their work is irreplaceable.

Severance and Timing

Affected employees receive at least 16 weeks of severance pay, plus one additional week for every year they worked at the company. Healthcare coverage continues through the end of 2026. Each person also gets a $1,500 stipend to replace their company laptop. Conte said he is personally responsible for the decision.

The cuts land one week after Patreon announced a partnership with Cloudflare to actively block AI bots from scraping creators' pages to train AI models. The company said AI scraping had grown sophisticated enough that passive robots.txt rules were no longer effective, and that stronger blocking was necessary to protect creator content. AI job cuts have claimed a growing share of tech layoffs throughout 2026, and Patreon's round follows similar restructurings at Microsoft and others earlier this month.

Patreon has not commented on which teams or functions were most affected by the cuts. The company also did not say whether it plans further reductions.
