DoorDash AI Agent Lets You Order Food and Groceries by Text

DoorDash is testing a text-based ordering experience that can build carts, remember usual orders, and handle checkout.

DoorDash AI agent ordering is coming to text messages, letting U.S. users ask for food or grocery items without opening the DoorDash app. DoorDash says the system can understand requests, search local options, build a cart, and handle checkout inside the text conversation. The beta is currently limited to users who join the waitlist on iOS. DoorDash announced the feature on September 30, 2026.

DoorDash AI Agent Can Build the Cart From a Simple Text

Users can text what they want instead of searching through restaurants or grocery stores. A request for a specific dish can trigger a search of local restaurants, while a broader request can lead to recommendations and a suggested cart. DoorDash says the system can also recognize a request such as "order my usual" and use past preferences, including recurring items and common order changes.

The agent is also designed for group orders. DoorDash says it can handle different quantities and dietary preferences in the same order, then let the user confirm the purchase directly from the text thread. That makes the feature less about conversational search and more about giving an AI system permission to complete a transaction.

Grocery Restocks Are Part of the Same Push

DoorDash is also adding faster grocery restocking tools inside its app. Users can ask for their usual items, adjust the cart, and review suggested swaps that DoorDash says can identify cheaper equivalent products from the same store. The company says more than 30% of grocery orders through Ask DoorDash are routine restocks, based on its mid-August to mid-September 2026 data.

The move follows DoorDash's earlier expansion of conversational shopping through Ask DoorDash. It also fits a wider shift toward agents that can take actions rather than only answer questions. DoorDash AI Agent Is Still in Beta

DoorDash says U.S. consumers on iOS can join a waitlist to try the text-ordering experience in beta. The company has not announced general availability for all users. DoorDash is also testing a separate MCP connector for corporate AI tools that can search, build carts, place orders, and track deliveries, but that program is a private beta for approved testers.

For consumers, the main change is simple: ordering can start with a message instead of an app search. The experience is still being tested, so availability and the final feature set may change as DoorDash expands the beta.
