What's New in Maps in iOS 27: Enhanced Flyover, Local Lists, and Smarter Search

Apple Maps in iOS 27 gets its most visible update in a few years. iOS 27 Maps adds AI-enhanced Flyover, a new Local Lists feature for discovering places in the US, and several improvements to search and navigation that make the app faster to use day-to-day. Enhanced Flyover: Sharper City Views Powered by AI

Flyover - the 3D aerial view of select cities in Maps - gets a visual upgrade in iOS 27. Apple combines existing aerial photography with AI to sharpen detail and produce more lifelike renderings of city landmarks, streets, and buildings. Select cities are supported at launch; Apple has not published the full updated list. Whether scouting a neighborhood before a trip or just exploring from the couch, the sharpened Flyover images look noticeably more detailed than the previous version.

Local Lists: Trending Places Without Tracking You

Local Lists is a new US-only feature that surfaces curated collections of places inside Maps. Categories include trending restaurants, good spots for kids, places to meet friends, and similar locally relevant suggestions. Apple says the insights are "derived with privacy in mind and never tied to individual users" - meaning trending data comes from aggregate signals rather than individual location history.

More Suggested Places and Trending Restaurants

Suggested Places, which first appeared in iOS 26.5, gets a notable expansion in iOS 27. Users can now swipe horizontally through many more recommendations instead of seeing just two suggestions at a time. A Trending Restaurants section also appears on the Maps search screen, surfacing what people are visiting nearby without requiring a specific search query.

Smarter Search, Better Navigation, and More

Natural language now works for routing in iOS 27 Maps. Users can describe a route with specific conditions - "avoid highways" or "find a stop for coffee on the way" - instead of configuring filters manually. A Parked Car widget for the Smart Stack makes it easier to jump back to where you left your car without opening Maps fully. Offline Maps also gets improvements in iOS 27, though Apple has not detailed what changed specifically.

Visited Places and Guides - two existing Maps features - expand to additional countries in iOS 27. Maps also gets a new icon design as part of iOS 27's refresh of all system app icons.
