WhatsApp Media Previews Are Rolling Out in Chat List
A new Android beta feature adds small thumbnails for photos, videos, and stickers beside the latest message.
WhatsApp media previews are rolling out to some Android beta testers, giving the chat list a small visual thumbnail when the latest message contains a photo, video, or sticker. The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.32.11 and is being enabled gradually.
WABetaInfo, which first reported the change, says the thumbnail appears alongside the existing Photo, Video, or Sticker label. The approach lets users identify what was shared without opening the conversation, while keeping the current chat-list layout largely unchanged.
WhatsApp Media Previews Make the Chat List Easier to Scan
The change addresses a small but common problem in WhatsApp. Multiple conversations can show the same Photo or Video label, forcing users to open chats one by one when they are looking for a particular item. A thumbnail adds enough visual context to distinguish those messages at a glance.
The update fits a broader series of changes aimed at making WhatsApp's conversation list more useful. Saganote recently covered new WhatsApp group-chat tools, including features that put more information and controls directly into the messaging experience.
Photos, Videos, and Stickers Get Thumbnails
Photos receive a compact preview next to the Photo label, while videos get their own thumbnail beside Video. Stickers are included as well, so the latest sticker can be recognized without opening the chat.
WhatsApp has not removed the text labels. Keeping both the thumbnail and media type makes the change additive rather than replacing information that users already recognize from the chat list.
The Feature Is Still Limited to Android Beta Testers
The media previews are currently tied to WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.32.11 and are not available to every tester. WABetaInfo says WhatsApp is enabling the feature for selected accounts and expanding access over time.
WhatsApp has not announced a stable-release date or confirmed equivalent availability for iPhone. The rollout therefore should be treated as a beta test rather than a finished feature available to everyone.
The update follows other recent WhatsApp changes that have expanded how users interact with chats across devices. Saganote's WhatsApp Web calling update covers another recent effort to reduce the need to switch between devices.
