YouTube Begins Rolling Out GIF Comments for Videos and Shorts

Animated reactions are arriving in YouTube comment threads, but access is still being enabled gradually.

TL;DR: YouTube is gradually rolling out GIF comments for videos and Shorts, with GIFs selected from an in-app library and wider availability planned for November.

YouTube GIF comments are beginning to appear for some users, letting viewers respond to videos and Shorts with animated images instead of text alone. The rollout is gradual, so some people can see GIFs in comment threads without having the option to post one themselves.

How YouTube GIF comments work

The feature uses a GIF library inside the YouTube app. YouTube announced the change during its September Made on YouTube event, alongside other updates to viewer and creator features. The company has not clearly confirmed whether users will be able to upload their own animated files, so the supported option is currently the in-app library.

YouTube’s official Made on YouTube announcement introduced GIFs in comments as part of its wider set of community features. The YouTube Data API revision history also documents an image URL field for comments and says the feature will be available to all users in November 2026.

The rollout is still limited

The GIF option is not available to every account yet, and current reporting indicates that access is not restricted to Premium subscribers. The gradual rollout means availability can differ between users. If the option is missing, that does not necessarily mean the account is ineligible.

GIF comments add another way for viewers to react in YouTube’s comment threads. The change also fits a broader push to expand how people interact with video: YouTube has been developing conversational AI editing for Shorts and YouTube Create, custom video feeds built with Gemini, and A/B testing for three video cuts in YouTube Studio. It has also adjusted how it recommends re-uploaded Shorts that add no original value.

Other platforms are adding richer ways to respond and work with video, including TikTok comments with voice messages, polls, and photo carousels and an X video editor with multilingual captions and green screen. Related video workflows include timestamped comments in Google Drive, Google Photos Video Remix, and Instagram Edits’ AI assistant for creator ideas. For a separate Google Photos privacy update, see the Redact tool for blurring sensitive information on Android.

For now, YouTube GIF comments remain a gradual rollout rather than a feature every viewer can use. The company’s developer documentation points to November 2026 for availability to all users.
