Google Home MCP Lets AI Agents Control Your Smart Home Devices

Google’s new MCP connection gives compatible agents access to device state, history, and supported controls.

Google Home MCP is now entering early access, giving compatible AI agents a direct connection to Google Home devices and event history. Google says agents such as Google Antigravity, Claude, Hermes, and OpenClaw can use MCP tools to inspect the home, analyze past activity, and run supported device controls.

What Google Home MCP Can Do

Google’s Home MCP server exposes several capabilities that turn a connected Google Home setup into a source of information and actions for an AI agent.

  • Discover homes, rooms, and connected devices.
  • Check real-time device states and connectivity.
  • Run supported commands on compatible devices.
  • Search historical device states and event logs.
  • Analyze activity across connected home devices.

That history access is one of the more unusual parts of the launch. Google’s early testers used Home MCP to ask an agent what happened across multiple cameras after the kids arrived home, or to analyze device history to count laundry loads and measure how long lights were left on. Agents can also send an audio message through a Google Home speaker when a background task finishes.

The setup also opens the door to agent-built interfaces. Google says testers used natural-language requests to create custom smart-home dashboards instead of relying only on predefined controls.

Home MCP Connects AI Agents Through MCP

Model Context Protocol, or MCP, provides a standard way for AI systems to connect to external tools and data. Saganote has covered the same pattern in Apple’s Safari MCP server, which lets compatible coding agents interact with a live Safari session.

Google’s Home MCP applies that model to a physical environment. The server can expose home structure, device state, control actions, and historical events through standard MCP tools. That makes the smart home another tool surface an agent can reason over rather than a separate app that must be operated manually.

Meta is using a similar approach for developers with WhatsApp Business MCP, which lets AI coding agents handle supported account setup, configuration, and testing tasks.

Early Access Has Strict Requirements

Home MCP is currently in early access. Google says the rollout is available in English to Google Home Premium Advanced users in the United States.

The developer documentation also lists an active Google Home setup, a Google Cloud project, and an MCP-compatible client such as Google Antigravity, Claude Cowork, or OpenClaw as prerequisites. Setup requires enabling the Home API and configuring OAuth credentials before the agent can access the home.

Early access

Home MCP is not a general consumer rollout. Availability, supported device behavior, and latency can change while Google continues testing the service.

Google Blocks Some Sensitive Actions

Giving an AI agent access to a real home also creates a different class of risk from connecting it to documents or websites. Google says Home MCP uses rate limits and safety protections and prohibits sensitive actions such as unlocking doors.

Google also warns that connecting a real home to an AI agent can produce unexpected or undesired behavior depending on the agent. Users can revoke an agent’s Home MCP access from the Google Home app or their Google account settings, and Google recommends informing other household members when a shared home is connected.

What Happens Next

Google’s developer documentation lists automation management as a future capability that is not supported yet. The current implementation already covers device discovery, live state monitoring, supported controls, and historical analysis, but Google says experimental device traits may not always work as expected and that some requests may have higher latency.

For now, Home MCP is best understood as an early access bridge between third-party AI agents and the Google Home ecosystem. The important change is that an agent can work with the state and history of a physical space, not just generate instructions about it.
