Google Q2 2026: Cloud Revenue Jumps 82%, Gemini Closes in on ChatGPT With 950 Million Users
Alphabet hit $119.8 billion in revenue for the quarter - its 12th consecutive double-digit growth period - but capex of $44.9 billion flipped free cash flow negative and sent the stock lower.
Google Q2 2026 earnings delivered $119.8 billion in revenue, up 24% year over year - Alphabet's 12th consecutive quarter of double-digit revenue growth. Cloud was the headline number: Google Cloud jumped 82% to $24.8 billion, its fastest growth rate in years, driven by enterprise demand for AI infrastructure and solutions. Alongside the financials, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai disclosed that Gemini's app now has 950 million monthly active users, putting it 50 million short of the milestone ChatGPT hit when it crossed 1 billion monthly users earlier this year.
Google Cloud at 82% Growth Is the Quarter's Defining Number
Google Cloud grew from $13.6 billion in Q2 2025 to $24.8 billion - an $11.2 billion increase in a single quarter. Cloud operating income reached $8.8 billion, up from $2.8 billion a year ago, a 212% year-over-year gain in segment profitability. Cloud backlog hit $514 billion, meaning Google has more contracted future revenue waiting to be recognized than many companies generate across several years. Nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 are now using Gemini Enterprise, and paid monthly active users for Gemini Enterprise grew 40% quarter over quarter.
Gemini at 950 Million Users Is One Data Point Away From Parity With ChatGPT
Gemini models now process 22 billion API tokens per minute. Gemini's app sits at 950 million monthly active users - 50 million behind where ChatGPT stood when OpenAI announced the 1 billion mark. Whether Gemini has since passed that figure is unclear; Google disclosed no historical monthly data on the app's growth trajectory.
Part of Gemini's reach comes from distribution advantages ChatGPT cannot replicate directly. Apple rebuilt Siri at WWDC 2026 using Google Gemini, putting Gemini inside every iPhone running the latest OS. Gemini also powers AI Overviews in Search, which Pichai said is driving query volume growth. Both figures are large, but whether the 950 million represents the same kind of engagement as ChatGPT's 1 billion depends on definitions neither company has disclosed.
Capex Rose to $44.9 Billion in a Single Quarter - and Free Cash Flow Went Negative
Alphabet raised its full-year 2026 capex guidance to $195-205 billion. Q2 capital expenditure came in at $44.9 billion - nearly double the $22.4 billion spent in Q2 2025. Operating cash flow was $39.1 billion, which means free cash flow for the quarter turned negative at -$5.9 billion. That is a rare outcome for Alphabet and the number that pressured the stock after the results came out.
Google is building the Frozen v2 chip with Gemini inference baked directly into the hardware, part of a broader push to build custom silicon alongside data center expansion. Pichai said demand for AI infrastructure continues to exceed available capacity - the reason capex keeps climbing even as free cash flow turns negative. Spending ahead of revenue at this scale is a bet that Cloud's 82% growth rate justifies the infrastructure being built today to serve the contracts already in backlog.
The $99 Billion "Other Income" Is Not What It Looks Like
Net income for the quarter landed at $112.1 billion - a 298% increase that dramatically overstates operating performance. $99 billion of Q2's "other income" came from unrealized gains on equity securities: investment portfolio appreciation, not revenue from any business unit. Strip that out and the actual story is operating income of $40.8 billion at a 34% margin - a business expanding its profit margin while funding a $200 billion annual infrastructure buildout.
Search, YouTube, and Headcount Round Out the Quarter
Google Q2 2026 earnings showed Search and other revenue growing 17% to $63.3 billion, with Pichai citing AI-powered features as a driver of query volume. YouTube ads reached $11.1 billion, up 13% year over year. Google subscriptions, platforms, and devices - the segment that includes Pixel hardware and Google One - grew 15% to $12.9 billion. Headcount reached 198,933, up from 187,103 a year ago. Google has not announced a date for its next product event or what its next earnings disclosure will cover about Gemini's user trajectory.
