Truecaller Scam Checker Brings Scam Detection to Links, Numbers and Messages

Truecaller has launched Scam Checker, a new service that takes the company's scam detection beyond caller ID. Truecaller Scam Checker lets people check suspicious phone numbers, web links and scam reports, while the company is also expanding the service to handle scams that arrive through messages and other channels.

The service is available on Truecaller's website without a sign-in, and the Android app is launching in India. Truecaller says users can see whether a phone number or URL is marked Safe or Potential Fraud and read related reports from its community. More detailed phone-number information, such as an associated name, still requires the regular Truecaller service and an account.

How Truecaller Scam Checker Works

For links, Truecaller says Scam Checker can follow shortened URLs and redirects before checking the final destination against its risk database and other fraud signals. Users can also search for phone numbers and browse community reports about scam attempts.

TechCrunch reports that users can paste a suspicious message and have the service identify a phone number or link from it, giving the checker a way to handle scams that start in messaging apps. That broader focus follows the same shift seen in other messaging security features, including WhatsApp's recent account protection updates.

Why India Is the First Android Market

Truecaller says the Android launch is starting in India, where scams increasingly arrive through messages, links and calls. The company says its ScamFeed community has about 20,000 scam reports in India, with around 1,300 new reports added each week.

The move also takes Truecaller further into security features that sit alongside traditional caller identification. That direction is relevant to recent changes in Android call protection, including the call forwarding security overhaul in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3.

Truecaller says it plans to broaden the types of scams Scam Checker can detect and add screenshot uploads for more detailed analysis. The company also plans to bring the service to more markets and add iPhone support later.

Scam Detection Beyond Caller ID

The launch reflects a change in where people encounter fraud. A suspicious call can now be followed by a message, a shortened link or a fake website, so Truecaller is extending its existing scam intelligence to those points as well. The company says the goal is to let people check the pieces of a suspicious interaction before deciding whether to engage with them.

For now, the web version is available without a Truecaller account, while the Android rollout starts in India. Truecaller's Scam Checker is the company's current entry point for checking phone numbers, URLs and scam reports.
