Apple Pay Reportedly Coming to India With Axis Bank as First Partner
The reported rollout would bring Apple's Wallet-based contactless card payments to Indian iPhone users, starting with Axis Bank.
Apple Pay India is reportedly nearing its debut, with Axis Bank expected to be the first major banking partner. Reports say the initial rollout will focus on Axis Bank credit cards, allowing eligible iPhone and Apple Watch users to make contactless payments through Apple Wallet. Apple has not publicly announced an India launch date, so the reported rollout should not be treated as confirmed.
Apple Pay India Would Start With Axis Bank Cards
Reuters previously reported that Apple planned to begin its India rollout with Axis Bank credit cards and add more lenders through individual agreements. Apple has also discussed participation with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, but commercial terms had not been finalized in the reporting. The latest TechCrunch report says the launch could now be imminent.
The reported first phase is focused on card payments rather than a broad replacement for India's existing digital-payment apps. Apple Pay stores a tokenized version of a supported card on the device, allowing contactless transactions without giving merchants the underlying card number.
Apple's own India site currently supports UPI for purchases on Apple.com, but that is separate from Apple Pay. Apple's published Apple Pay country list also still does not include India, which is why the service's official availability remains unconfirmed.
UPI Makes the India Launch Different
India already has a mature mobile-payment system through UPI, which handles QR-code and account-to-account payments at enormous scale. Reports on the Apple Pay rollout have differed on whether UPI support could arrive with the service, but the Axis Bank reporting does not establish UPI as part of the initial launch.
That distinction matters because Apple Pay would initially function mainly as a digital wallet for supported cards. Saganote previously reported that Apple Pay could launch in India without UPI, making the reported Axis Bank rollout a continuation of that earlier development.
What Indian iPhone Users Could Get
If the reported launch goes ahead, eligible Axis Bank cardholders should be able to add supported cards to Apple Wallet and use compatible iPhones or Apple Watch models at contactless payment terminals. Apple Pay uses device authentication such as Face ID or Touch ID to authorize payments.
The launch would also extend the role of Apple Wallet in India. Apple's iOS 27 update already adds features such as bill splitting and new ways to manage passes in Wallet, as covered in Saganote's iOS 27 Wallet guide.
Apple has not confirmed the exact Indian launch date, the complete list of supported Axis cards, or the timing for additional banks. Those details will determine how broadly the first rollout is available.
What Happens Next
The clearest confirmation will come from Apple or participating banks and from India appearing on Apple's official Apple Pay availability list. Until then, the reported launch remains a source-based development rather than an officially announced Apple service.
Apple's official Apple Pay documentation explains that users add supported credit, debit, or prepaid cards to Wallet and use them for contactless payments.
