Spotify Running Mode is now live. Available today in Fitness Hub for Premium users on iOS across seven countries - US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden - the feature lets runners pick from 25 presets, set a target BPM, choose workout type, and configure duration, with Spotify selecting tracks to match each phase of the run.

25 Presets Cover Interval Runs, Steady Runs, and Pyramid Workouts

Three formats ship at launch. Runners choose between interval runs, steady runs, and pyramid workouts, then customize duration, BPM, and music genre to match the session. BPM matching is the key technical difference from a standard playlist - the app syncs track tempo to the target cadence set before the run, so runners do not have to skip through a generic queue mid-workout. Running Mode also generates audio cues for different stages of each workout, with verbal prompts for when to push, recover, or maintain pace - though audio cues only work in English for now.

AI Playlist Technology Powers the Music Selection

Running Mode builds on prompted playlists. Spotify's AI playlist feature, in beta for over a year, already attracted many users who create workout and fitness lists - a usage pattern Spotify says directly inspired the running feature. Google's Lyria 3.5 launched this week with tempo and BPM control as headline features, tracking a broader shift: AI music tools now match audio properties to physical activity rather than just mood or genre. On July 14, Spotify also launched Talk to Spotify - a voice assistant in beta for Premium users in the US, Ireland, and Sweden - and the same AI infrastructure could eventually let runners adjust their mix mid-workout by speaking.

Spotify and Peloton Launched a Fitness Partnership Earlier This Year

Spotify's Peloton partnership launched earlier in 2026. Under that deal, Peloton fitness content came directly into the Spotify app - an early signal that Spotify planned to own the fitness listening experience rather than route it through third-party integrations. Running Mode is the next step: a native feature built from Spotify's own data about how Premium users actually listen during workouts.

Strava Removed Its Spotify Integration Earlier in 2026

Strava dropped Spotify. Earlier in 2026, the fitness tracking app cut Spotify from its Record feature, ending the in-app music queue runners used during activities. Building native fitness modes rather than depending on those integrations is a different bet - it assumes Spotify's listener data is sufficient to compete with apps built specifically for training. Waze added a Motorcycle Mode with Gemini AI personalization this month, and Spotify Running Mode follows the same logic: major platforms replacing third-party bridges with dedicated native modes.

Running Mode is iOS only for now. OpenAI launched Health in ChatGPT this month, connecting Apple Health and medical records directly to the chatbot - consumer platforms pushing deeper into structured fitness and health sessions. Spotify Running Mode has no confirmed Android launch date.
